A look back at the Vietnam War gives artists no peace

An older piece of writing, but no less impostant, at least until the US comes up with a clear policy in Iraq.

Intel gets U.S. nod to build plant in China

I don't know about you, but the last time I checked geopolitics and geobusiness didn't mix. In fact, at least with the current American administration, mixing these two usually results in disaster. Here's a Washington Post story you might want to read. It's on a much smaller scale than the IBM deal, but with a similar outcome; ridding Americans of jobs while producing undesirable, unpredictable results.

South Korea's suicide plague

Something that I always found telling about the differences between two distinctly different Asian cultures, was the fact that usually, when you read about Japanese suicide, you'll find the cause attributed to money or love or school failure. But when you read about Korean suicide, it seems to more often be about politics, or some other revolutionary cause. Here's an interesting story about the subject.

One fact that jumps off the page: suicide is the number one cause of death for men in their twenties in South Korea. That's not only sad but really startling. These young men are the future of Korea. Why do they feel that they have nothing to live for?

Late Afternoon walk at La Jolla Shores

Had a nice low tide on my way home from work yesterday, so decided to stop by La Jolla Shores and take a walk. Rock formations being exposed everywhere as the tide dropped, and some interesting patterns set in the sand by the retreating waters.

78 degree (Fahrenheit) afternoon in early March - can't beat that. Photos un-retouched - straight from the camera, as usual.

BTW - for you birders out there, the first little guy enjoying a meal on the exposed low tide rocks is a Spotted Sandpiper (not a common bird, at all), and of course the last species is a Marbled Godwit, a common winter (non-breeding) bird along our coast.

Interesting New York Times article about the foreign exchange reserves in China and the three women that control them. Interesting, especially in light of the recent fall in the Chinese stock markets.

A Warming World

Is anyone still surprised by this fact. With the increased pollution coming from India and China as they drive off in their shiny new cars, how long will it be before Tokyo, Los Angeles and Shanghai are all under water? Not to mention all the Pacific islander's that have already lost their homelands.

WWII sex slavery issue sparks new debate in Japan

Here we go again. Absolutely everyone I know in Japan wants to accept this fact, apologize and get on with it. Except these damn lawmakers. My advise; just grow up and get it over with.
